Ashland Farmer’s Market and Their Sustainable Practices

Rogue Valley Growers Market

Only one more week until the Rogue Valley Growers Market finally reopens its doors in its Ashland location and we are already getting very excited! Starting on March 3, 2020 delicious local produce can be shopped every Tuesday from 8:30am-1:30pm at the National Guard Armory, 1420 E. Main Street, Ashland and it is also open on Saturdays. The Saturday Ashland Market is open from May 2 through October 31, 2020 and is located at 100 Block of Oak Street, downtown from 8:30am-1:00pm.

Besides fruits and veggies, handmade crafts and goods ranging from organic bread to engraved wooden spoons can be shopped from friendly vendors while enjoying freshly made food and beverages as well as live music, making grocery shopping less of a burden than an experience and a great way to start into the day.

Some more facts about the market: It has actually already been around since the summer of 1987. Originally started in Medford, it has moved its way to Ashland over the years, as well as maintaining a farmers market at Hathorn Park. Starting in the 1990’s, Ashland started their own growers market. If you can’t make it to the outdoor growers market, there is an indoor one during the winter months. It is open from December 3, 2019 – February 25, 2020 on Tuesdays 10am-2pm and located at the Phoenix Plaza Civic Center on 220 N. Main St., Phoenix, OR 97535.

The farmers at the Rogue Valley Growers Market have a large emphasis on sustainable and organic farming. Sustainable and organic farming is not only better for your health, but also for the environment. Growers markets are there to help people shop locally and support their communities while making healthy choices. Growers markets are great for helping people shop seasonally, which is much more sustainable than constantly buying food that is imported from other places in the world because it is not in season locally. If strawberries are not in season you will not see them at a growers market, but all of the fruits in season will be there.

Another great benefit to the growers markets is that they accept food stamps, making sustainability in reach even for the people who may not regularly be able to fit it into their budget. Many of the farmers offer ‘box deals’ as well, where the more you buy the bigger the discount in your wallet. See each individual vendor for details.

Growers markets are also a great way to get involved in your community and meet the people who live around you. Visit a friendly vendor to inquire as to how you can help.

Go to the Rogue Valley Growers Market to shop locally, sustainably, organic, and enjoy the company of your community. The RVGCM and the City of Ashland are working together to ensure a future of sustainable food and jobs for the local community by supporting and continuing the markets all year.
